John Tether was the son of Joseph and Ann Tether of Stambermill and was married to Sarah Tether. He had worked for Jones and Attwood for a number of years and volunteered in August 1915. He was posted to the Royal Engineers and was serving during 1917 in A Company of the 4th Labour Battalion. At some point on the Ypres front he was seriously wounded and sent to a military hospital at Rouen. Here he died of wounds and is buried in Bois Guillaume, Rouen, Communal Cemetery Extension (A 1 B). Pioneer John Tether was 49 years of age and one of the oldest men to die in the Great War. He had two sons and a son-in-law, as well as two brothers, serving overseas and is commemorated on the Stourbridge and St. John's church Memorials.
