Arthur Tomlinson was born in West Bromwich and was the son of Mrs Lucy Tomlinson of 63 Bank Street, Brierley Hill. He enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers and probably joined the 1/6th Battalion in the 50th Division early in 1918. They were facing the Hindenburg Line near St. Quentin and had to endure the German artillery barrage of the21st March. Heavy casualties were sustained and they were forced to retreat. They moved to the Lys sector and on the 9th April suffered more losses in the battle of Estaires and the subsequent retreat. Private Arthur Tomlinson was killed in action on the 11th April. He was 18 years of age and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
