Charles Wesley was the son of Harry and Ellen Wesley of Harwal House, Halesowen Street, Blackheath. He was commissioned Lieutenant in the South Staffords and served in the 1st Battalion. In late 1918 the 1st Battalion was in Italy and he joined them on the 8th August and, although the Austrian army was disintegrating, some units put up a great deal of 'fight'. In October combat was limited and armistice came on the 31st October. It is assumed that Lieutenant Charles Wallace Wesley was injured at this time. The state of his injuries worsened and he was sent to military hospital at Sangatte. He was 29 years of age and died of wounds on 6 February 1919. He is buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, (VIII B 9) and commemorated on the Blackheath and Halesowen Memorials.
