John Whiteman was the fourth son of Edward, a glass-cutter, and Charlotte Whiteman of High Street, Amblecote. John Whiteman was employed at the Holloway End Glass Works. He was a keen sportsman and well known as a local cricketer. He volunteered for the Territorials in December 1915 and joined the 2/6th Battalion of the South Staffords. They were sent first to Ireland to end the Easter Rising and then to the Western Front. In April they followed up the slow retirement of the German forces to the new Hindenburg Line. They were able to capture Jeancourt but endured a setback with losses at Hargicourt quarries. Among those killed was Private John Whiteman. He was 24 years of age and is buried in Hargicourt British Cemetery (1 A 2) and commemorated on the Amblecote Memorial.
