FOWKES, Charles William

Royal Navy HMS Conflict. 29 November 1918

Charles Fowkes was the son of Richard and Annie Fowkes of Cradley and served in the Royal Navy as a stoker. His last vessel was HMS Conflict, a destroyer built in 1894. He died while in service of pneumonia at but probably as a consequence of a more serious illness. Stoker Charles Fowkes died on the 29th November 1918 at the Royal Hospital, Gosport, and is buried in Cradley churchyard. He was 27 years of age and is commemorated on the Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
