William Barrett was born in Lower Hasbury and lived with his parents at 16 Park Street, Oldbury. He enlisted in the Worcesters and was posted to the 11th (Service) Battalion. They fought in the Balkan campaign to assist Greece and Serbia against Bulgaria and Austria-Hungary. After a long stale-mate the final battle was fought at Doiran starting on the 18th September 1918. It was a complete Allied victory but Private William Barrett was seriously ill by this time and died at the base hospital at Salonika on the 17th October 1918 and is buried in Salonika Lembet Rd. Cemetery (158). He was 27/0 years of age and is commemorated on the Halesowen and Hasbury school Memorials.
