BARTLETT, Albert

Royal Irish Rifles. 06 June 1918

Albert Bartlett was the son of Phoebe Bartlett of 6 Belmont Road, Wollescote, and attended Valley Road School, Lye. He enlisted in the Warwicks and was later transferred to the 12th Battalion of the Irish Rifles. In the Spring of 1918 they were forced to retire with considerable loss in the March Battle of the Somme and Albert Bartlett was probably sent from the Training Reserve in April to fill the gap. They were brought into action again for the Battle of the Lys in April and defended Mont Kemmel in another 'backs to the wall' struggle. In the last days of the last German advance Private Albert Bartlett was killed in action on the 6th June. He was 18 years of age and is buried in Klein-Vierstraat Cemetery (V A 18) near Mont Kemmel. He is commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote, Lye church and Valley Road School Memorials.
