Arthur Beasley was the son of John and Rosanna Beasley of Netherend, Cradley. He volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 9th (Service) Battalion which was sent out to Gallipoli in 1915. The original landings had turned into a stalemate which the new landings failed to break. After the evacuation of the peninsula the 9th moved on to Mesopotamia to continue the war with the Turks. This was an equally difficult campaign up the Tigris in 1916 and the failure to prevent the surrender of Kut lowered morale considerably. In the heat of Summer the Worcesters were only occasionally on the attack and, in attempting to reach an outpost named Sodom, there were casualties. Among them was Private Arthur Beasley who died on the 24th June. He is buried in Amara Cemetery (XI H 11) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
