BILLINGHAM, David

Worcestershire. 15 August 1915

David Billingham came from Wollescote where his family later lived at 3 Brook Crescent in one of the early post-war council houses. He volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 9th (Service) Battalion. After training they became part of the reinforcement for the Gallipoli expedition and landed on the 6th August 1915. They came ashore without loss but the advance off the beach-head did not gain much ground. In the fierce fighting for the ridge of the peninsula Private David Billingham was severely wounded. It seems that he was taken by ambulance ship to a military hospital but died at sea. He was 25 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
