Harold Blackham was born in Smethwick and was the son of Son of Albert and Nellie Blackham, later of 120, Saltergate, Chesterfield. He attended Claughton school and was living in Chesterfirld when he volunteered for the Leicester Territorials. He joined the 1/5th Battalion in the 46th (North Midland) Division which moved to the Western Front in March 1915. They spent the next three months in the Messines sector engaged in trench warfare. Inevitably there were some casualties and Private Harold Blackham was killed in action on the 4th June. He was 21 years of age and is buried in Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery (I D 17) and commemorated on the Dudley and Claughton school Memorials.
