Alfred Blick was born at Oldswinford and was a pre-war regular in the Warwicks. He was in the 2nd Battalion in the 7th Division and had been promoted to Sergeant. They arrived in France in October 1914 and went straight to the defence of Ypres, fighting at Langemarck and Gheluvelt. They spent the winter in Artois and then took part in the Spring offensive of Sir John French. At Neuve Chapelle in March they played a minor role, but led the attack at Festubert which started on the 15th May. The attack over flat country seized the first line of German defences, but advanced no further. Enemy machine guns and artillery caused great numbers of casualties and Sergeant Alfred Blick was killed in action on the 16th May. He is commemorated on the Le Touret, Stourbridge and Stourbridge Methodist church Memorials.
Commemorated at:
Mary Stevens Park, Stourbridge, West Midlands, United Kingdom
