Albert Brettle was the son of Charles Harry and Eliza Brettle, of 45 Crabbe Street, Wollescote, and the husband of Annie Brettle, of 2 Sun Street, Quarry Bank. He volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 9th (Service) Battalion. After training they were sent out to Gallipoli to reinforce the troops on the peninsula. This second landing took place on the 6th August 1915. The actual landing was uncontested but the attempt to advance to the ridge on the next day was met by fierce Turkish resistance. The Worcesters suffered losses and on the 7th August Private Albert Brettle was killed in action. He was 24 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
