BROOKS, Harry

Harry Brooks was born in Oldswinford, and moved later to Wordsley. His sister lived at 37 Angel Street, Stourbridge. He enlisted in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and joined the 2nd Battalion in the 27th Division. They were stationed in India before the war, but arrived in Flanders in December 1914. In the continuing battles for Ypres they fought at St. Eloi in March 1915 and then at St. Julien at the end of April. Private Harry Brooks was seriously wounded at some point in this fighting. He returned to Britain and was sent to Leicester Hospital where he died on the 14th May. His body was brought home and he was buried with full military honours in Stourbridge Cemetery (O 198). He is name commemorated on the Stourbridge and St. John's church Memorials.
