Benjamin Burford was born in 1875 in Aston and by 1891 he was living with his parents, Joseph and Mary, at 39 Vicarage Road, Wollaston. By 1914 he had married and was living in Cobden Street with his wife Amelia and seven children. He was employed as a carpenter and joiner. He volunteered some time in 1915 and joined the Royal Engineers. He was posted to 237 Field Company but became ill. He was sent to a military hospital in Henley-on-Thames, but died there of 'spotted fever'. Private Benjamin Burford was 40 years of age and is buried at Oxford Cemetery (2 42) and commemorated on the Stourbridge and Wollaston church Memorials.
