Hartley Cartwright was the son of Noah and Isabel Cartwright of 33 Stourbridge Road, Lye. His wife was Elizabeth who later moved to Norton Canes, Staffordshire, and remarried. He worked for Messrs Eveson Bros., the hardware manufacturers. He volunteered for the Worcesters in 1916 but was later transferred to the 8th Battalion of the Berkshires. In the Spring of 1918 the Berkshires moved from Flanders to Artois and occupied the trenches facing the Hindenburg Line near St. Quentin. They were prepared for the German Spring offensive but were grossly outnumbered. The attack arrived on the 21st March preceded by an immense artillery barrage. Many units were surrounded and large numbers of men were killed in action. One of them was Private Hartley Cartwright who is commemorated on the Pozičres, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
