Jesse Cartwright was married to Sarah Elizabeth Cartwright and lived at 16 Bromley Street, Lye. He volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 4th Battalion. They were in the original landing force which arrived on Gallipoli on the 25th April. After achieving a successful landing, they met fierce Turkish resistance and the vital summit ridge was not reached. Two fierce battles were fought at the village of Krithia but there was no break-through. When fresh landings took place on the 6th August, the original forces, including the 4th Battalion, attempted to break out at the same time. However, the third battle of Krithia was unsuccessful and Private Jesse Cartwright was seriously wounded. He was taken to Egypt to a base hospital where he died on the 12th August. He was 46 years of age and is buried in the Alexandria (Chatby) cemetery (9K143) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
