CHAPMAN, William T

Queen's Royal West Surrey. 01 July 1916

William Chapman attended Halesowen C of E school and later moved to Wednesfield, Staffs. He joined the 13th Hussars and was transferred to the Queen's West Surreys. He then served in the 7th Battalion which landed in France in July 1915. Its first battle was to go over the top on the first day of the Somme on the 1st July 1916. It was one of the few units to reach its objectives, Montaubon wood and village, but the cost was high. The casualties included Private William Chapman who is commemorated on the Thiepval, Blackheath, Halesowen and Halesowen C of E school Memorials.
