John Chilton lived in Love Lane, Oldswinford, and He had been born in Walsall and had moved with his wife, Harriet, to be employed by Daniel Oakley, a confectioner. He volunteered for the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and joined the 11th Battalion in the 37th Division. In 1917 they played a major part in the final events of the Battle of Arras in May and were sent to the front line again for the September stage of the Third Battle of Ypres. By this time the weather was more advantageous for attack than in July and the Warwicks helped to push the British line forward from Hill 60 towards Klein Zillebeke. However, on 11th October, probably as a result of shelling, they suffered casualties including Private John Chilton who was killed in action. He was 36 years of age and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot, Stourbridge and Oldswinford church Memorials.
