CLAY, Frederick

Worcestershire. 30 December 1917

Frederick Clay came from Blackheath and enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment. He was posted to the 1st Battalion in Flanders and had to endure the fearful conditions of the Third Battle of Ypres. After its efforts the 1st Battalion recuperated behind the lines but were called again on the 26th December to the front line on the Passchendaele ridge. There was much snow and heavy shelling. One man was killed in the four day tour of duty. He was Private Frederick Clay on the 30th December 1917. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot. Blackheath and Halesowen Memorials.
