CRUMP, Thomas

Royal Warwickshire Regiment. 21 August 1918

Thomas Crump lived at 12 Heath Lane, Oldswinford, and attended Oldswinford C of E School. He was married and enlisted on the 27th March 1916 in the Warwicks. He joined the 16th (Birmingham City) Battalion in the 5th Division. He might well have seen action on the Somme in 1916 and certainly would have been at the Third Battle of Ypres, where he was wounded on the 24th July 1917. He returned to England for convalescence and went back to the front on the 4th August 1918. The first Allied victory of 1918 was won four days later and another full scale attack was planned to start on the 21st August involving the 5th Division. The Battle of Albert was the first stage of the Allied Advance to Victory and was immediately successful. However, Private Thomas Crump was among those killed in action on that day. He was 33 years of age and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois, Stourbridge, Oldswinford church and Oldswinford C of E School Memorials.
