George Darlow lived at 489 Vauxhall Street, Dudley and volunteered for the Worcesters. He joined the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front. In 1915 they were in Artois and involved in the battles of Festubert in the Spring and Loos in the Autumn. In 1916 they moved to the Somme for the second phase of the battle, fighting at Bazentin on the 14th July and at High Wood. They were in the trenches again in August at Delville Wood and were part of a minor attack on the 21st in the confused remains of the woodland. Eleven men were killed while they were in the front line, including Private George Darlow who was buried at Heilly Station Military Cemetery (III F 5) and is commemorated on the Dudley Memorial.
