DAVIES, Horace

Royal Artillery. 07 April 1918

Horace Davies lived at 143 Hagley Road, Oldswinford, and was an apprentice to Mr J.T. Ford, the Stourbridge printer. He was also a member of the Wesleyan Methodists. He volunteered in October 1915 and went to France with the Royal Field Artillery on the 22nd May 1916. He had seen a great deal of action by March 1918 when he was with C Battery 107th Brigade on the front line near St. Quentin. The Germans launched the first of their great Spring offensives on the 21st and the British and Allied forces were slowly driven back over the old Somme battlefield. At some point Gunner Horace Davies was seriously wounded and taken back to No. 5 Casualty Clearing Station. Here he died of wounds on the 7th April. He was 21 years of age and is buried in the nearby Picquigny Cemetery (E 17) and commemorated on the Stourbridge, Oldswinford church and Methodist church Memorials.
