Dorsetshire. 21 October 1918

William Davies was the younger son of George Davies, a glass-house manager, and his wife.He was a chorister at Holy Trinity church and worked as a furnace-man at Booth Bros. of The Platts. He and his wife lived at 27 Platts Crescent, Amblecote. He enlisted in September 1916 and was sent to the 5th Battalion of the Dorsets who went to the Western Front in March 1918 as replacements for those lost in the German March offensive. He fought in the August Battle of the Scarpe in late August when the Allied offensive began but was seriously wounded and taken to the General Hospital at Le Treport. His wife, Alice, was able to visit him in hospital but he died of wounds on the 21st October 1918. Private William Davies was 27 years of age and is buried in Mount Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport (VIII L 2A) and commemorated on the Amblecote Memorial. Memorial Notice ‘Sadly missed and silently mourned by his loving sister and brother’ October 1918 Could we have raised his dying head Or heard his last farewell The grief would not have been so great To us who loved him well.
