William Davies was the son of Mrs Margaret Davies of 13 Furnace Lane, Halesowen, and attended Halesowen C of E school. He volunteered for the Worcesters in 1914 and joined the 3rd Battalion on the Western Front. In March they suffered heavily in the diversionary attack at Spanbroek Mill south of Ypres. Further German advances brought them close to Ypres during April and May and the Worcesters in the 3rd Division were called upon to push them off the Bellewaerde Ridge. A determined attack took place on the 15th June but only a short distance was gained. Among the 60 men who were killed was Private William Davies. He was 18 years of age and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Blackheath, Halesowen and Halesowen C of E school Memorials.
