FOXALL, William

Worcestershire. 01 June 1917

William Foxall was the son of John and Emily Foxall of 37 Spring Street, Lye. He enlisted in the Worcesters and was sent to the 4th Battalion on the Western Front. The fought on the Somme in 1916 and in the Spring of 1917 were deeply involved in the battles around Arras. They fought at Monchy-le-Preux on the 14th April and again on the 23rd. For most of May they were in the front line attempting to capture nearby Infantry Hill, in sight of the Hindenburg Line. The last effort was on the 30th May. German resistance remained strong and Private William Foxall was killed in action on the 1st June. He was 19 years of age and is commemorated on the Arras, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
