Robert Gonderton was the son of Samuel and Hannah Gonderton and was born in Derby. In 1914 he was living at 82 Bromley (Lane), Pensnett, and in 1915 he volunteered for the South Staffords. It is not clear which battalion he joined but it was after the Winter of 1916 that he went to the Western Front. He must have been efficient in the use of the machine gun because he was drafted into the Machine Gun Corps. He was seriously wounded and sent back to Britain. Private Robert Gonderton died of wounds on the 27th October 1918. He was 23 years of age and is buried in the churchyard of St. Mark’s, Pensnett, and commemorated on the Pensnett Memorial.
