Benjamin Green was born in Stambermill and attended Valley Road school. He enlisted in the Army Service Corps but was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment in the 19th Division. In the Spring of 1918 they were forced to retreat in the German offensives on the Somme, the Lys and the Aisne. The Wiltshires reinforced them for the Aisne and they then returned to the front line in the Lys sector to take part in the Advance to Victory. After successes by neighbouring units the Wiltshires were able to follow up the enemy withdrawal and on the 3rd September a major attack was launched towards Richebourg. Under the cover of an intense artillery bombardment the advance was highly successful but among the small number of casualties was Private Benjamin Green. He was killed in action and is commemorated on the Loos, Lye and Wollescote, Lye church and Valley Road school Memorials.
Commemorated at:
New Road Methodist Church Centre, Stourbridge, West Midlands, United Kingdom
