Clifford Green was the youngest son of Mrs Green of 92 Dudley Road, Lye, whose three sons died in the Great War. Clifford volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 4th Battalion who were sent out to Gallipoli. They landed on the 25th April with little opposition but failed to make progress against strong Turkish resistance. In subsequent attacks the British forces could not make sufficient progress against the Turks to capture the peninsula. Fresh landings took place on the 6th August when the original troops, including the 4th Battalion, attempted to break out at Krithia at the same time. The stalemate continued with trench warfare among the forest ravines and with minor actions. In one of these Corporal Clifford Green was seriously wounded and died on the 19th October 1915. He is commemorated on the Helles, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials. Thomas was killed on the 22nd August 1918 and William on the 25th January 1917.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
