GRIST, John

Leicestershire. 25 September 1916

John Grist was the son of John and Emma Grist of 60 Arthur Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight. He was married to Jessie Maude and in 1914 they were living at Pen Rallt, King Street, Wollescote. He enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment and joined the 6th (Service) Battalion. They landed at Suvla Bay on Gallipoli on the 6th August 1915 and then returned to fight on the Western Front. In the Summer of 1916 they were deeply involved in the Battle of the Somme and fought in the long struggle to capture High Wood, followed by the capture of the villages of Flers and Courcelette. Private John Grist was killed on the 25th September and was 28 years of age. He is commemorated on the Thiepval, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
