Bert Grove was the son of Mr and Mrs Grove of 24 Crescent Road, Netherton, and attended Trinity Methodist Chapel, Netherton. He enlisted in the Worcesters and was sent to the 1/7th Territorial Battalion on the Western Front. After fighting in the 1916 Battle of the Somme the task of the Worcesters in the Spring of 1917 was to follow up the withdrawal of the enemy forces to the Hindenburg Line. At Templeux-Guerard they were responsible for storming the heavily fortified 'Mound' and driving the German forces into a speedier retreat. Among the casualties was Private Bert Grove who severely wounded and taken to a military hospital near Amiens where he died. He was 19 years of age and is buried in Bray Military Cemetery (II H 48) and commemorated on the Dudley, Netherton and Trinity Methodist Chapel Memorials.
