HAMBLETT, Harry

King's Shropshire Light Infantry. 08 March 1916

Harry Hamblett was born in Stourbridge and was living in Lye when he volunteered for the Shropshire Light Infantry. He joined the 7th (Service) Battalion which was in the 3rd Division from 1915. They fought in the sector south of Ypres and were at St. Eloi in early 1916. They held the line of the Comines Canal at The Bluff, a slight mound which overlooked the German lines. It was contested by the German forces in February and a major counter-attack was planned by the British. The battle started on the 2nd March and The Bluff was secured. Private Harry Hamblett was seriously wounded and taken to a Casualty Clearing Station. He died of wounds on the 8th March and is buried in Reninghelst Military Cemetery (I D 7). He is commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
