HART, William G

Worcestershire. 31 January 1915

William Hart was born in Birmingham and was a pre-war regular soldier serving in the 1st Battalion of the Worcesters. They returned from Burma after the outbreak of war and in November joined the 8th Division on the Western Front. They moved to Artois and faced the enemy near Neuve Chapelle. They had alternate duties in the front line trenches but these were poorly made and often deep in water. Both sides were keen to make their presence felt and this meant constant rifle action. In the month of January the Worcesters lost 28 men who were killed in this way and among them was Private William Hart. He is commemorated on the Le Touret, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
