Joseph Hickman was an early volunteer for the Worcesters and was posted to the 9th (Service) Battalion. After training they were sent to Gallipoli to reinforce the troops on the peninsula. Their landing took place on the 6th August 1915 but, although the landing was successful, the first main attack on the Turkish defences on the 10th August was a disaster. The Turkish forces defended well and the Summer heat and the rugged terrain combined to weaken the British effort. Private Joseph Hickman was among the many killed in action on this day. He is commemorated on the Helles and Wordsley Memorials.
Commemorated at:
High Street, Wordsley, West Midlands, DY8 5RU
