HICKS, Horace

Machine Gun Corps. 04 October 1918

Horace Hick(s) volunteered for the Worcesters and joined a Machine Gun section. He was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, probably in 1916, and served in the 57th Battalion. This was part of the 57th (West Lancashire) Division and by the middle of 1918 they were involved in the Advance to Victory. Their advance began in late August when they came up to the strong German defensive line south of Arras. A major attack started on the 26th August at Riencourt and in a five day battle they penetrated the strong enemy defences of the Drocourt-Queant Line and were well on their way to Cambrai. The next phase came at the end of September when their attack took them to Graincourt and to the St. Quentin Canal just south of Cambrai. However, among the casualties was Private Horace Hick, who was killed in action on the 4th October. He is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois, Stourbridge and St. John's church Memorials.
