HIGGS, Albert

South Staffordshire. 21 March 1918

Albert Higgs lived at 9 The Delph, He enlisted in the South Staffs and went to the 2/6th Territorial Battalion, which took part in the 1916 Battle of the Somme and during 1917 were in both the Third Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Cambrai. In each case severe casualties were sustained and Albert Higgs probably arrived to restore the battalion’s complement. In early 1918 they were close to the Hindenburg Line west of Cambrai in the front line trenches and experienced the Bruckmuller barrage at 2 a.m. on the 21st March. The densely packed lines of attackers took heavy casualties but at the end of the day the Staffords’ battalion virtually ceased to exist. Among those killed in action was Private Albert Higgs whose parents were still seeking information in February 1919. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials and on the Delph District Roll of Honour.
