Harry Hill was the son of William and Anne Hill of 4 New Street, Pedmore Road, Lye. He volunteered for the Worcesters and went to the 9th (Service) Battalion. They were sent to Gallipoli in August 1915 and in early 1916 were transferred to Mesopotamia. The reinforcements, probably including Harry Hill by this time, were unable to relieve Kut before it capitulated but this city remained the major objective. Forces were built up and the decision was made to advance up the Tigris and capture this important point on the road to Baghdad. The Worcesters attacked on the 25th January at Amara and suffered heavy casualties in terrain without cover. Among the casualties was Private Harry Hill who was killed on this day and is buried in Amara British Cemetery (XVIII B 3). He was 19 years of age and is commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
