HILL, Thomas

Worcestershire. 10 November 1915

Thomas Hill was the son of Mary Ann Hill of 51 Pedmore Road, Lye. He volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 9th (Service) Battalion. After training it was sent out to Gallipoli to reinforce the troops on the peninsula. This second landing took place on the 6th August 1915. The actual landing was uncontested but the attempt to advance to the ridge was met by fierce Turkish resistance. The Worcesters suffered huge losses in the next four months, made worse by heat and disease. Trench warfare continued among the gullies and woods and among the wounded was Private Thomas Hill. He was taken by hospital ship to a military hospital in Egypt. He died on the 10th November at Alexandria and is buried in the Alexandria (Chatby) Memorial Cemetery (D 114). He was 24 years of age and is commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
