Walter Hill attended Hasbury School and volunteered for the Worcester Territorials. He joined the 1//7th Battalion who went to the Western Front in March 1915. They were closely involved in the 1916 Battle of the Somme and in the Spring of 1917 were in the area east of Peronne. They followed up the retreat of the German army towards the Hindenburg Line and on the 5th April helped the 1/8th in their remarkable capture of the 'Mound' at Templeux-Guerard. They then went on to the formidable Hindenburg Line. A concerted attack was made on the fortified Gillemont Farm on the 25th April but German defence was too strong. Casualties were high and Private Walter Hill was one of those killed on this day. He is commemorated on the Thiepval, Halesowen and Hasbury School Memorials.
