HOLDEN, Arthur

Worcestershire. 11 December 1918

Arthur Holden came from Lye and enlisted in the Worcesters. He was sent to the 11th (Service) Battalion which went to Greece in 1915. They fought in the Balkan campaign to assist Greece and Serbia against Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary and Turkey. After a long stale-mate the final battle was fought at Doiran starting on the 18th September 1918. It was a complete Allied victory but Private Arthur Holden was seriously injured. He died of wounds at the base hospital in Salonika on the 11th December 1918. He is buried at Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria (889) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
