William Homer volunteered in 1914 for the Worcesters and went to the 3rd Battalion. This battalion was stationed in the Ploegsteert sector in 1915 and then fought on the Bellewaerde Ridge during the second Battle of Ypres. In March 1916 it moved to Vimy ridge and became involved in a contest among the craters and pits of this much tunnelled area. A week in the front line began on the 3rd May and the Worcesters were greeted with the detonation of an enormous mine. The next few days were affected by heavy shelling and Private William Homer was among those killed in action on the 12th May. He is buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery at Mont St. Eloi (I K 11) and is commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
