Archibald Hyde came from Lye and volunteered for the Worcesters. He served in the 11th Battalion and was sent to the Balkans to halt the Bulgarian attack on the Greeks. Although the enemy had been stopped beside Lake Doiran, by the end of 1916 the conflict had reached stalemate and trench warfare had taken over. A major attack was planned for April and the Worcesters were to advance up the Jumeaux Ravine and seize the local summit. The night attack was frustrated without major gains. A second attempt was made on the 8th May. It was another night attack but the clear night was accompanied by low mist which created major difficulties for the attackers. The summit was not reached in spite of heavy losses. They included Private Archibald Hyde. He is buried in Doiran Military Cemetery (III F 6) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
