HYDE, George Harry

Worcestershire. 02 January 1917

George Hyde was born in Stourbridge and lived later in Birmingham but could have had some connexion with Lye through Albert Hyde of Dudley Road, Lye. He enlisted in the Worcesters and was sent to the 3rd Battalion which in March 1916 moved to Vimy ridge to fight among the craters and pits of this much tunnelled area. The Worcesters then moved to the Ploegsteert front where, although there was no offensive in January, shelling continued and Private George Hyde was killed in action on the 2nd January 1917. He is buried in Tancrez Farm Cemetery (II C 10) near Armentičres and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
