JACKSON, Alfred

Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. 03 September 1916

Alfred Jackson was born at Old Hill and his mother later lived at 11 Maple Tree Lane, Cradley. He enlisted in the 'Ox and Bucks' and joined the 6th (Service) Battalion, They arrived in France in 1915 but the third phase of the Somme in 1916 was their first occasion to attack from the front line. They entered the trenches for the Battle of Guillemont on the 3rd September. It was a decisive attack which took the village and allowed for further successes on the flank. However, it was a hard won battle and Private Alfred Jackson was among those killed in action. He was 25 years of age and is commemorated on the Thiepval, Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
