Canadian Machine Gun Corps. 27 September 1918

Thomas Lane emigrated to Canada before the war and volunteered for the Canadian Expeditionary Force, joining the 4th Battalion of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. From August 1918 the Canadian Corps were involved in the Advance to Victory. Their attack began on the 26th August and in a seven day advance they fought their way south of Arras to the Cambrai road. Their advance resumed with the breaching of the Hindenburg Line south of Cambrai. This great attack went in on the 27th September, taking Bourlon Wood and crossing the Canal du Nord. It was preceded by a huge barrage and ended with the capture of great numbers of German troops. Private Thomas Lane, however, was killed on the opening day of the attack He is buried at Quarry Wood Cemetery, Sains-le-Marquion, (III B 27) and he is commemorated on the Canadian National, Stourbridge, and Roman Catholic church Memorials.
