LESTER, Ernest William

Royal Engineers. 12 April 1918

Ernest Lester was the son of Charles William Lester of Dudley Port, Tipton, and was married to Mabel Elsie of 23 Moor Lane, Brierley Hill. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers and served in the 141st Army Troops Company. He was probably in the front line in 1917 and again in April 1918 during the second German Spring offensive which opened on the 9th April. In the defence of the Ypres salient he was seriously wounded and taken to the Duhallow Casualty Clearing Station at Ypres, where he died of wounds on the 12th April. Sapper Ernest Lester was 23 years of age and is buried in Duhallow A.D.S Cemetery (IV E 32) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill, Brierley Hill church and Brockmoor church Memorials.
