MALE, Albert

Worcestershire Regiment. 13 July 1916

Albert Male was the son of Henry and Mary Ann Male and was married to Susan. He volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 3rd Battalion on the Western Front. In 1915 they were stationed near Ploegsteert and fought in the Artois battles including Loos in September. Early in 1916 they transferred to the Somme area, and for the opening of the Battle of the Somme on the 1st July were placed in Corps Reserve near La Boisselle. When the first day went badly, they went into the front line at Aveluy Wood. The limited gains were successfully held against German counter-attacks and the next objective was Ovillers. Several attacks were made but casualties were heavy. Among them was Private Albert Male who was killed in action on the 13th July. He was 28 years of age and is commemorated on the Thiepval and Wordsley Memorials.
