MARSHALL, Samuel Edward

South Staffordshire. 29 March 1918

Samuel Marshall enlisted in Brierley Hill for the South Staffords Territorials and joined the 2/6th Battalion which went to the Western Front in 1916. They entered the struggle of the Third Battle of Ypres and then moved to Artois. They suffered heavily in the aftermath of the near break-through at Cambrai, particularly from gas while recovering in Bullecourt Wood. In early 1918 they were still at Bullecourt beside the Hindenburg Line. The German Spring offensive had been anticipated but, when it came on the 21st March, it was overwhelming. The majority of the South Staffords were casualties. Private Samuel Marshall was wounded and taken to a Casualty Clearing Station in the rear. He died of wounds on the 29th March and is buried in Cabaret Rouge Cemetery (XX E 9) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill, Brierley Hill church and Brockmoor church Memorials and the Delph District Roll of Honour.
