Alfred Mason was born at Burslem in north Staffordshire but his family moved to Amblecote. He was employed at Messrs Webb Corbett’s glassworks. He volunteered in August 1915 and in May 1916 joined the 9th (Service) Battalion of the Worcesters in Mesopotamia in the arduous campaign against the Turkish forces. He was quickly affected by disease and despite hospital treatment he died on the 6th August. He was 18 years of age and is buried in Amara War Cemetery (IX C 21) and commemorated on the Amblecote Memorial. Memorial Notice. ‘Ever remembered by his loving mother, sisters and brothers’ August 1919 When last he clasped his hand in mine And said goodbye to me I little thought that hewould lie In a grave across the sea.
