Alfred Meers was born in Birmingham and after enlistment was sent to the 143rd Siege Battery in the 27th Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery. They served with the 9th Division which was closely involved in the battle of the Somme in 1916. Serious shelling duels between the artillery continued after the infantry attacks stopped and perhaps Gunner Alfred Meers was seriously wounded in this way. He was sent to a Casualty Clearing Station near Boulogne where he died on the 30th December 1916. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery (XX M 5) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
