MORRIS, William Henry

South Wales Borderers. 03 February 1918

William Morris was the son of John Morris who ran the china and hardware store in Market Street, Stourbridge. He was well known in the town's Liberal Club but had moved away from Stourbridge to live in Cardiff at 125 Cathays Terrace with his wife, Elizabeth, and two children. He enlisted in the South Wales Borderers and by 1918 he had been promoted to Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion in the 29th Division. They had been strongly involved in the latter stages of the long 1917 battles at Ypres and Cambrai. In January 1918 they took over the trenches at Passchendaele in one of the most unpleasant parts of the front line. Lieutenant William Morris was killed on the 3rd February 1918, probably as a result of shelling. He was 29 years of age and is buried in Oxford Rd. Cemetery (V G 40) and commemorated on the Stourbridge and St. Thomas's church Memorials.
